Social Good News State Of America 2026 Series
By Kristen Thomasino, Editor-in-Chief of The Social Good News
The construction industry in the United States continues to face one of the most significant labor shortages in modern history. In 2026, contractors across roofing, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, framing, and general construction sectors are struggling to recruit and retain skilled workers at a pace that meets growing project demand.
Infrastructure investments, housing demand, commercial renovations, and disaster recovery projects have all contributed to increased construction activity nationwide. At the same time, a large portion of the skilled labor workforce is approaching retirement age, creating a widening gap between experienced workers leaving the field and younger workers entering the trades.
According to industry leaders, workforce shortages are impacting project timelines, increasing labor costs, and placing pressure on operational efficiency. Some contractors report turning down projects due to limited staffing availability.
However, the labor shortage is also creating new opportunities for trade education and workforce development. Trade schools and apprenticeship programs are seeing renewed interest as more young adults reconsider traditional four-year college pathways. Skilled trades are increasingly being viewed as stable, high-income career opportunities with long-term growth potential.
Women are also entering construction leadership and technical roles at higher rates than in previous decades. Industry organizations continue to emphasize the importance of workforce diversity and inclusion as part of long-term labor sustainability.

It has been a place of celebration, security, comfort, and belonging. It is where children take their first steps, families gather for holidays, neighbors become lifelong friends, and memories are created that last a lifetime. Yet the role of the home is changing. The home of the future will not simply provide shelter. It will support health. Improve efficiency. Protect the environment. Connect families. Strengthen communities. And increasingly, it will become an intelligent partner in everyday life. Across San Diego County—and throughout the nation—we are witnessing one of the most significant transformations in residential living since the invention of modern electricity. #california #sandiego #poway #homeimprovement #construction #realestate #homes

ARTICLE 12 The 2026 San Diego County Home Improvement & Real Estate Guide Why More Families Are Designing Homes for the Future By Kristen Thomasino Editor-in-Chief, The Social Good News Home Should Grow With You For generations, the American dream centered around buying a home, raising a family, and eventually downsizing later in life. Today, that story is changing. More Americans are choosing to remain in their homes longer than ever before. At the same time, many households now include multiple generations living under one roof. Adult children are staying home longer, aging parents are moving in with family, and grandparents are playing larger roles in daily family life. As a result, homeowners throughout San Diego County are asking a different question: "How can we make our home work for us—not just today, but for the next 20 or 30 years?" The answer often lies in thoughtful design. Aging in place and multi-generational living are no longer niche concepts. They are becoming central to the future of residential home improvement. #construction #homeimprovement #realestate #california #sandiego

ARTICLE 9 The 2026 San Diego County Home Improvement & Real Estate Guide How California Homeowners Are Taking Control of Their Energy Future By Kristen Thomasino Editor-in-Chief, The Social Good News The Energy Conversation Has Changed For decades, homeowners thought about electricity as a monthly utility bill. The process was simple. Electricity came from the grid. The homeowner paid the bill. Few people gave much thought to where the power came from or how it was produced. Today, that conversation has changed dramatically. Rising utility costs, evolving technology, battery storage innovations, electric vehicles, and increasing interest in sustainability have transformed the way homeowners think about energy. Across San Diego County, homeowners are increasingly asking: Can I reduce my utility bills? Can I generate my own power? What happens during outages? Should I install solar? Is battery storage worth it? How can I prepare for the future? For many families, the answer begins with understanding the opportunities available today. #construction #homeimprovement #realestate #california #sandiego
